An unimmunized 10-month-old girl is brought to the emergency department because of temperatures to 40 C (104 F) and listlessness for 24 hours. Examination shows a stiff neck. Leukocyte count is 24,000/mm3. Gram's stain of cerebrospinal fluid shows small pleomorphic gram-negative bacteria that require NAD and hemin for growth. A vaccine for which of the following organisms would have prevented this infection? A) Bordetella pertussis B) Clostridium tetani C) Corynebacterium diphtheriae D) Haemophilus influenzae E) Neisseria meningitidis F) Salmonella typhi G) Streptococcus pneumoniae
