A previously healthy 19-year-old woman comes to the medical clinic because of severe abdominal pain for the past 18 hours. She has had increasingly frequent painful urination over the past 24 hours. She is not sexually active. Temperature is 38.5 C (101.3 F), pulse is 90/min, respirations are 14/min, and blood pressure is 115/76 mm Hg. The suprapubic area is tender on palpation. Microscopic examination of urine shows pyuria, hematuria, and bacteriuria. Which of the following organisms is the most likely cause of these symptoms?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Whether sexually active or inactive, E. coli is still the most common cause of uncomplicated UTI's. Chlamydia, GC, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are not correct; the first two are not implicated, and Ps. aerug. is seen in chronic/complicated infections. Staph. aureus is usually only seen in UTI's in patients with wound or respiratory sepsis with this organism. Many times the blood cultures will also be positive for SAUR.
