Is it true that the programs may find out if you apply for more than one specialy (especially those in the same hospital)? Does this hurt (if so, how badly it will hurt) the application? For example, will they think the applicant is not sure / determined to a certain specialty? Thanks a lot for your inputs!

I would be wary of applying to 2 diff specs in same hospital especially if ya really wanna end up in that hospital - might jeopardize yr chances for either position in the likely scenario that they find out coz you are kinda defeating yr own application and personal statement - unless you are a very smooth talker and can convince them that by looking at 2 different specialities you really want to be sure that what you decide is best for all concerned - nothing short of a herculean task!

As a coordinator in IM, I am never going to know that you are also applying for surgery, radiology, peds, ER - UNLESS you assign the wrong PS to your application, or if I see you after you interview in IM when you are interviewing for another program. Will it hurt you? Not that I know of, I mean I'm not going to tattle on you to my PD.
