My recommenders recommended that I waive my right coz according to them it does make a huge impact - but I guess this is variable - try to put yourself in PD's shoes and think of how would you look at the 2 diff letters ( I dont gaurantee that this thought experiment will help!)

Personally, I believe that it does not really matter much (and this has nothing to do with the fact that all my recommendations would be classifiable as 'not waived' lol). If yours is the much hyped up 'US LOR' the PD's always have the option of emailing or even calling your recommenders. If its an LOR from your home country, it would not carry much weight either way.

the thing is how do programs know if you waived your lor or not, everything is downloaded onto their computers. BBB would be able to answer this question. I heard that programs do not know if they are waived or not. Since they are just seem on the computer screens or printed out.

The latest ERAS requirements for LORs state that your letter writer must mention in the letter whether u waived the right or not. Also you are supposed to mail the letters to ERAS with a signed cover letter that tells them whether u have waived the right. I dont know if they verify this though..or how its done. Perhaps someone else can shed more light on this. As to whether waiving makes a difference or not..one of my letter writers insisted that they consider a waived letter more authentic at his program and so he suggested I waive my right to see his letter, which I did. My guess is that it varies from program to program.
