28-year-old woman was diagnosed with galactosemia shortly after birth. She has been on a galactose-restricted diet since the diagnosis and her medical history is otherwise unremarkable. In a visit to her physician, she expresses the concern that she will not be able to lactate normally. The physician reassures her that she will still be able to make galactose and that lactation will not be compromised by her galactosemia. The presence of which enzyme in this patient’s mammary tissue allows the synthesis of galactose for milk lactose? A. Aldolase B B. Galactokinase C. Lactase D. Lactose permease E. Uridine diphosphate–galactose 4-epimerase

UDP hexose 4 epimerase is the enzyme which transform UDP glucose in UDP galactose; UDP galactose with glucose in the presence of UDPgalactose:glucose galactosyltransferase will be the last reaction for lactose synthesys.
