Maintaining Your Motivation
Learning takes effort under any circumstances. But learning for the USMLE takes more effort than many people expect. In medical school, learning one subject at a time is good enough. By contrast, the USMLE requires you to master all subjects at the same time. In addition, the depth of understanding required by the USMLE is greater than that required by most medical school exams. You must not simply memorize the key material, but be able to use it—to apply it to solve the problems presented to you in the exam questions.
All of this means that being motivated, and maintaining that motivation over time, are essential if you are to complete the tasks required to give you the higher score you should be seeking. Although different techniques work for different people, here are some simple suggestions to keep yourself engaged and to help see your task through to the end.

Remind yourself of your final goal. Remember what your ultimate goal really is: not simply passing an exam, but passing an important hurdle on your way to being a practicing physician. When in the middle of the swamp, wrestling with the alligators, remember why you are doing all of this in the first place. Think about where you are going and why you want to get there.

Link your efforts to concrete rewards. Provide rewards to yourself for completing certain tasks. "When I finish this section, I will get some ice cream." When the task itself is not enough to sustain you, add in external rewards.

Vary your techniques to maintain interest. Doing the same tasks over and over again gets repetitious, and repetition can get boring. Vary reading with taking notes, with making outlines, with writing questions. Doing different things helps to sustain concentration and keep up your interest.

Arrange for an environment to support your efforts. Seek a quiet spot where you feel comfortable and at home. If you are worried about interruptions, it can be hard to give your full concentration to the task at hand. Is your home a sanctuary or a place of distraction? If comfortable, then study there. If distracting, then seek a different place to study. Changing your study location from time to time can also help to add variety that can make the task seem less boring. Find the environment that works for you and do not be misled by the advice of others.

Focus on the task, not on performance. Measure your study time by what you learn, not by how many pages you cover. This is not cramming for an exam. This is a long-term study sequence. Your goal is mastery, not memorization. Stop at the end of the day and look at what you have accomplished. Resist the temptation to look at how much you have yet to do. You will cover it all if you just keep with it and let each day take care of itself.

Focus on what you can control, not on what you can't. Distractions are bound to occur. Often, there is little you can do to prevent them. What you can control is how you react to these intrusions and how long you will let them throw you off your stride. If something is getting in the way of your studies, admit it. Then take time off from your studies to deal with it. Whether family, health, or emotional trauma, you will study better and learn more if you first give the distraction your full attention, and then put it behind you. Trying to study on through when you are truly distracted is simply a waste of time and mental effort.

Set realistic short-term goals. Decide what you will cover each day and then stick to it. But be realistic about your expectations. Biting off more than you can chew will not aid your mental digestion. You want to pick goals that you can reasonably achieve; goals that work for you, not for someone else. This will allow you to mark your progress and feel good about your accomplishments. When faced with a large task, such as studying for this exam, setting and meeting smaller goals each day will let you measure your progress and feel good about what you are accomplishing.

Encourage yourself. Don't be afraid to cheer yourself on. Start each day of study by telling yourself how well you are doing. End each day by congratulating yourself on what you have done. Always focus on your accomplishments, not on what is left to do tomorrow. Tomorrow can take care of itself.
Finally, don't be afraid to talk with yourself about how motivated you feel. The process of preparing for the USMLE is not fun. Don't expect it to be. But by working on your motivation and applying these simple suggestions, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
