As many of you, I am an IMG. I graduated in 2002. I have worked for two years, and have been a stay at home mom for another two years...so that makes a total of four years scince my graduation. My step 1 score is 90, and step 2ck is 97...I havent done cs yet ( it's scheduled for october 4th). I really am confused about which programs I should apply to. It seems most of the visitors of this forum arent very enthusiastic about surgical programs...See the problem is that I just love the OR, so I really would like to apply for some surgical field, be it plastic, or neurosurgery, or ENT....or Ophthalmology...But what do think guys, is there any hope at all that I could get a position in any of those fields???????...In general, what programs do you think an IMG with my scores couldget...keep in mind that I am not a green card holder.
thanks a lot you guys.

Until there is life and until the "light at the end of the tunnel" is not an in-coming train, there is hope.:-)

That said, well, your scores are decent but surgical specialities also look for some sort of experience: ithe 2 yrs of work ex that you have, was it in any surgical speciality?

Also, how about trying to get some USCE in surgical field? Although its kind of late for USCE..I mean, you gotta apply in september, but you can always mention that you are working at "blah blah" place, should you get one, in your PS...or else shoot an email to the program at a later date when you do get the opportunity for surgical USCE...

One more thing: ENT and Optho..these are very, very difficult for AMGs too..so you guess how likely an IMG is to land up in such a branch (I dont want to write that these are impossible...miracles do happen)...still do apply for them if they are your goals: you dont want to go on with your life thinking that you might have got them, but you never tried...goodluck!

Lastly, I dont want to discourage or anything, but surgical branch is a highly demanding branch...so it might be difficult to play both roles together: an intern and a mom...but again...strength come from within...and super-moms of today are experts in every field they take on!

goodluck...go follow your dream to the end of the road and give us all the goodnews in a couple of months from now..:-)

best short term scenario - consider a prelim surg yr as its a requirement for the specs u mentioned and very easy to get into

Thanks a lot apurva. Actually, I dont know what a prelim surgery year is..I mean what program do I list on my application, general surgery..? And do they pay you during that first year?(money is money!) and last, will it be guarenteed that I get one of those specialties? If I could just bother you with a little more details.
Thanks a whole lot though!

Nothing is impossible. There is no failure but give-up. work hard and talk to the director whose program you are interested in and ask him/her what extra documents/expereince you need to have in order to be a competent candidate. Get involved in clinical work in surgery...sometimes connection is also important in the medical field.

prelim surgery is a 1yr surgery spot. its one of the easiest to get into and u need it for applyin to radio, ophthal, ent.. im dont know a lot about surgery. but i think its best for u as u get 1yr usce. pay and all details in freida. do a search there. and there is no guarantee that u will get those specs as they are most competitive. however with good efforts u cud land a general surgery categ further on down the road. hope this helpedsmiling face
