Will my past professional experience be a disadvantage for me to get IM residency, as I worked as, at the same time and for the last 6 yrs, as a primary care giver and Emergency doc?

And when a prog says moonlighting is not allowed within the institution does it mean it could be allowed in another one?

Moonlighting is allow for residents in some hospitals and depends on your visa. If you are on a J1 visa, no moonlighting - don't even think about it. It's because you are on an educational visa. H1b visas can allow moonlighting if it's written into the original paperwork for the government that a portion of your duties are moonlighting. Also, remember that moonlighting hours will count for your maximum of 80 hours a week that residents are legally allowed to work. And any program director can deny you moonlighting if your performance isn't up to were he thinks it should be. Good luck

well, one of the most important criteria I'm looking for in a prog is moonlighting. do you think the PD would find it contradictory that I say I will go back to my country after the residency but I need an H1 visa for the moonlighting?

DONT MENTION MOONLIGHTING AT AN IVIEW TO PD as an img. OR U HAVE TECHNICALLY KISSED THE PROGRAM GOODBYE. very few pds are supportive of it - i was told about this by a friend ask in vague terms to some resident. and check out on freida if the program has written about its moonlighting.

Residency is educational. Moonlighting is not. Moonlighting is hardly ever allowing in the first year - occasionally in the second. Residents have to have the PDs approval to moonlight. Apurva is correct - don't mention moonlighting in an interview. You might ask some of the residents that you talk with during the day about moonlighting. Moonlighting is the exception, not the standard.
