A 62-year-old man comes to your office for evaluation of bone pain in his legs and lower spine. He mentions that his hat size has been increasing over several years. Physical examination shows bowing and deformity of the bones in his lower extremities and increased warmth of the skin overlying his tibias. Laboratory studies show the following levels: serum calcium, 10.0 mg/dL; serum phosphorus, 3.2 mg/dL.
Which of the following should be done next?

A) Bone biopsy
B) Measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D
C) Measurement of alkaline phosphatase
