A 27 y/o man is found to have a solitary throid nodule during a routine health maintenance exam. A thyroid scintiscan shows uptake of radioactive iodine by the nodule. Which iof the following is the most likely diagnosis? a) chronic autoimmune (Hashimoto's) thyroiditis b) follicular adenoma c) granulomatous throiditis d) medullary carcinoma e) pappilary carcinoma Also, can someone please explain to me what the significance of radioactive iodine uptake is? And its relation to all the answer choices? Thanks.

B as long as the thryoid tissue is functioning normally there would be normal iodine uptake, if the thyroid activity is increased as in hyperthyroidism it would show increased uptake and so on. Out of the answers given here, Hashimotos thyroiditis does not usually present with a solitary nodule and would should show reduced uptake. B, C E would also show reduced uptake as the function of the thyroid tissue would be compromised and therefore the answer would be B
