i would like to ask so many questions for IMG how took or about to take step1
as IMG how difficult the exam was ?
how long do you believe is the sufficient preparation period?
what was the hardest/weakest subject on you?
if you would have the oppertunity would you take the exam directly after your preclinical phase or after graduation? why?
do you belive that the preparation will be easier if one takes step1 after preclinical phase directly (as american students do?
did you went to kaplan course? if so..is it important ?imean couldnt you study alone and pass?
what review books or other sources did you use?
how was your score?
what do you advise me as INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL STUDENT?
thank u so much

hi yoga,

i am a medical student in germany and i took the step1 a month ago after three years of medical school. i think it is a good idea to take step1 after your preclinical phase (you should have had pathology, microbiology and pharmacology though - which i had in the first half of the third year). i did NOT have any internal medicine or surgery.

i will write a more detailed opinion on this when i have received my score. until now i just know that i PASSED using the OASIS trick.

best wishes

6 months wud be sufficient preparation but i took the exam after graduation.

the weakest subject is a matter of individual preferences. one thing ive note is that previously anat was hardly important. however it was tested pretty heavily tested in my exam and in quite a few friends. moral of the story u cant leave anything out. must know all the basic kaplans atleast. my weakest one was gross anat.

i took my exam after graduation and i felt my cklinical knowledge did back me up pretty well..however that was the reason i devoted a longer time period to step 1 but just 2 months for step2. also ive heard that step 1 knowledge duz come in handy but i havnt taken CK yet so i wudnt know.

american students can afford to just pass whereas for immigrants its better if u get good scores, preferaably in 90s...hence u cant equate their experience to urs.

review material

kaplan DVDS and notes. ( also Q book)

HY gross anat, embryo, histo

BRS patho ( this i dint use)

Goljan audio and his lecture notes/Rapid review series pathology + slides.

( goljan material also includes 36 pages, 100 pages...etc)

First AID ..main review book before exam.

good luck smiling face

look thru ppl's exam experiences and prep journals...and go for that person's advice whose study pattern resembles urs. remember there's unlimited amount of advice available. its impossible to follow all of it. smiling face

and do loads of questions. 2-3 weeks before the exam get q bank online and make good explanatory notes from it. a cheaper emerging alternative is usmleworld though i have no idea what its like ( u'll have to ask around)

if ur planning to take NBME exams for self assessment prior to the actual one, make sure u dont do NBME questions before hand on the forum etc.

Hi Yoga... being an IMG means nothing about the grade you can get... all you need is a good preparation. I can tell, I live in the Caribbean where half of my classmates have taken the Step 1... most of them got over 90s (including 97s and 99!). All they did was study from kaplan and first aid, hear goljan audio, Qbank and nbme part one. So... its SO POSSIBLE! I am preparing it too, I'll take it in 6 weeks and I really hope I can get such good scores! but we are all post graduated though... I think is better to take it after you graduate, but is much better if during your career you can study kaplan and other usmle material, so that when you graduate, they'll be familiar and all you'll need is a couple of months to refresh it... GOOD LUCK

thank u all for reply
study_ing=>where to get kaplan dvd from?
isnt 6 months are too long for preparation?

OMG.... Never do your step 1 before at least studying Internal Medicine
if you do step 1 before that you'll be very week in the clinical Qs which are increasing every year...
at least read NMS medicine before doing the step 1 since most of the Qs in the test are about Pathology and Pathophysiology which are asked in a clinical way that is so close to internal medicine.
Good Luck
