D.Following ovulation during each menstrual cycle. During each menstrual cycle several primary stage follicles are stimulated to grow, via FSH. Under normal circumstances only one of these follicles reaches full maturity, while the others degenerate and become atretic. Eventually the degenerating oocytes form a corpus atreticum; where the cells of the follicular cells get replaced by connective tissue.

C there are a few million oocites formed in the fetal development, but most of them undergo apoptosis before birth, so the female newborn has a few hundred thousands left of which onlt about 4-500 will end in secondary oocytes durring the life.

The correct answer is C There are about 400,000 follicles in the ovaries at the time of birth.This is a reduction from millions at the begining.So the process of apoptosis is over at birth
