An 18-month-old boy is brought for a well-child examination. He was born at 37 weeks' gestation and weighed 2800 g (6 lb 3 oz). There were no prenatal or perinatal complications. Developmental history indicates that he is able to run and walk up stairs while holding his mother's hand. He can hold a crayon but does not scribble spontaneously. He is at the 40th percentile for length and 50th percentile for weight. Examination shows a crude pincer grasp. Which of the following is the most appropriate assessment of fine and gross motor development? Fine Motor Gross Motor A ) Delayed normal B ) Normal delayed C ) Delayed delayed D ) Normal normal

I picked D. but the curde pincer is late for a 18 month-old, but i thought about the large variability of the infants... Now I think it is probably A.

same confusion here. gross motor seems normal. fine motor is confusing.

i remember from a previous q that an 11 month old can pick a raisin from the floor. this child can hold the crayon but cant scribble spontaneously. is it a problem with motor or not?

I would say it is normal. not evidence based medicine but: my neghborīs daughter is exactly 1 1/2 years. I called her mom and told her what to do, and the baby didnīt do anything with the crayon spontaneously until mommy tried to teach her what to do. my room mate did the same with his little brother and same thing happened. both babies have normal milestones according to last follow up visit (info given by both moms) just canīt handle it. (d) is my answer.
