is it sensible to apply to both prelim and categorical med in order to have more chances? or will that actually decrease chances of getting residency? whats the difference between prelim med and categorical med? can we use the same personal statement for both, since i don't see a difference in the two?

does anyone know the answer to the question. i just want to know if it makes good sense to apply to both prelim and categorical med in the same college. and if yes, can i use the same personal statement for both or should i tailor the statement specifically for each.

Look at the bottom of this page - there are similar topics that have been answered. The short answer is that you can apply for both, but if you are really wanting a three year program, and accept a 1 year program, you have to do this all over again.
