There are many disease states that alter the metabolism of tryptophan. Incidentally, it becomes important because this is the only AA (other than Met) to have a single codon code for it. (oh wonder what if that is knocked off). Which of the following situations can one expect to have increased tryptophan floaring around? A. Zollinger Ellison syndrome B. Hartnup disease C. Carcinoid Syndrome D. Hepatic Encephalopathy E. A person on an exclusively corn diet (how smart) F. A female on OCP's

2 Hartnup disease because decrease in the metabolism of tryptophan leads to niacin deficiency

is it the metabolism or the absorbation of neutral amino acids impaired in Hartnup disease?I think it is the absorbtion so it will not be the answer.

I can't remember the exact pathway, but I think oral contraceptives decrease conversion of tryptophan-->niacin, leading to a build up of the amino acid. Answer F?

hey guys here is the description. relationship of choices with tryptophan A. Zollinger Ellison syndrome: Tryptophan can increase gastrin secretion but not cause ZE syn B. Hartnup disease: Decreased absorption of tryptophan in GI/Kidney, therefore dec trp C. Carcinoid Syndrome: Increased utilization of trp to make serotonin, dec trp D. Hepatic Encephalopathy: decreased metab of Aromatic AA, therefore Inc trp E. A person on an exclusively corn diet (how smart): Corn def in trp F. A female on OCP's: Increased metab of trp, therefore dec 5HT, therefore can cause depression.
