A gene encodes a protein with 150 AA. There is one intron of 1000bps, a 5'untranslated region of 100bp and a 3' untranslated region of 200bp. In the final processed mRNA, how many bases lie between the start AUG codon and the final termination codon?

A. 1750

B. 750

C. 650

D. 450

E. 150

Please explain how do you calculate this...thanks

I am not sure, but I would do it like this...

The protein has 150aminoacids = 150(3bp)= 450bp

now they give us : Intron= 1000bp ; 5'UTR= 100bp ; 3'UTR=200bp

I wouldn't count Intron bp, because they will be spliced out during the process of transcription so, we would have

5'UTR--Exon--3'UTR

if the protein has 450bp that is also counting 3' and 5' UTR right? So finally

5'UTR (100bp) -- 150bp -- 3'UTR (200bp)

I am considering UTR as counted for the gene encoding this protein.

But I am not completely sure, please somebody correct me if I am wrong.

answer e) 150bp if UTR counts or

d) 450 if UTR doesn't count at all.

Vallia, where did u get this qs, does it have an answer? and thanks a lot for the questions wink

I'll go with D because:

Only translated bp are counted>>> 150 x 3 =450bp And those are these that are coding for polipeptide.

  #4

it is D, the q was from Kaplan notes, thanks guys for explanations

ok, then for sure is 450bp, thanks vallia, I haven't gone through all questioons from kaplan sad but it's good I know how to face thgis qs now, thanks guys.

I agree! Its D.. 3x 150= 450..The other ones doesnt matter! ; )

  #7

yes it is 450 ,

and i think it is the right answer be coz in the stem of q it says from AUG to TERMINATION CODE so the q excludes the untranslated regions .
