In shoulder exam, we need to expose the shoulder. If we untie the gown, how should we cover the trunk part? is it OK to leave it open?

u untie the gown and bring it down and make sure it does not ge beyond his lower trunk... you can use the cover sheet and cover his lower any wyas...... this way u can see the both shoulders.. make sure u ar e able to see ACJ, SCJ , whole of calvicle and upper arm.... also in inspection u have to see the shoulder form behind as well... u will have to ask the SP to get his arms out of the arm hole so that u can check movts....thats how i did it..... in practice

i hope this helps

about hip pain cas, to do PE:i'll take pulse, ROM of hip & knee, Sensation, Knee reflex. No palpation.
Is that enough for hip pain cas?
do we always exam pt in supine position? Any way we can do in sitting position if we run out of time?
Thnx

I would have thought that examination of hip will be incomplete w/o palpation of pubic ramii, trochanters and upper femur... But may be such a case wont come if they dont want us to expose pt in his underwear.... I usually practice hip exam with patient lying down supine and keeping him/her decent with a sheet, exposing one hip at a time. Examine the normal hip first very quickly & briefly and then examine the affected hip by inspection, gentle palpation over trochanters, pubis and hip joint and checking ROM. and finally neurovascular status.

I hope this helps. I am no expert though and I am sure there will be more ppl on this forum to explain better.
