Hi guys,

I am a 6th year medical student and i have been trying to apply for "Clerkship electives" in US, but the biggest obsticle is that almost all hospitals expect from you a "Malpractice insurance" a.k.a. "Liability insurance" and most of them insist that they can not provide for visiting students such insurances and if they don`t have this, they shouldn`t bother to apply sad

i live in europe and i have asked all insurance companies here but none have such a service that covers US too!!

has anyboy had this experince? how should i get a malpractice insurance ? are there any online reliable companies that i can buy that from them?

one more Q., some of these med schools tell you to choose 3 periods and they finally get to choose one of these 3 depending on the availability,etc.. so how can i buy "insurance' for a specific period. so if i get accepted for the other 2, the insurance goes to the ashtray? can i buy an "Open" 1-month insurance (like plane tickets) or such a thing doesn`t exist ?

i highly appreciate your help.

thanks .

How about trying other hospitals you can buy malpractice insurance through?
Like Mount Sinai in NY, and University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston..I am going to UTMB next Feb. I've been trying to find malpractice insurance but I couldn't. But there should be some way..Good Lucksmiling face

i hope im not too late. MALPRACTISE INSURANCE SHOULD BE FREE FOR A MEDICAL STUDENT. please contact teh Medical Protection Society (MPS ORG) in your country or the MDU (medical defense union). its free. and american elective programs accept it.

hmm.. dharjma, i'm sure it's not

let me explain something to you: we don't pay malpractice insurance; our univerisites don't pay malpractice insurances; OUR PHYSICIANS don't pay malpractice insurances!!! wtf, why hide: THERE WAS NEVER A PHYSICIAN SUED FOR MALPRACTICE in my country.

There was a case in which one guy went in an operation with a hernia and came out without his dick!!!! it's true, the doctor said it was a moment of loosing his sanity and I think, but not sure that he lost his licence (even if he insisted to continue practicing)!!! even that, wasn't malpractice!! raised eyebrow

did I mention that after he cut the guy's dick he trew it in the trash?
shaking head

conclusion: in every normal country, with a normal medical system that would be free!! not ours!!

i think you misread my earlier statement man. what i meant was malpractise insurance for a medical student doing an elective in the USA under the MPS or MDU is free. as in no charge whatsoever. all u need is to be a member of mps or mdu. membership for medical students is FREE.

  #13

how can we reach them? i can`t seem to find their websites.
thanks.

Hello everyone.

Just a quick question. I just started like 2 months ago (after I finished med school in El Salvador) to really get into the processes of the USMLEs and such. I came upon the famous LORs, which I had no idea were so important and so difficult to get. Now, my question is regarding the USCE. I understand that Oberverships are no good, and that Externships are the way to go (or well, better). Do I have to pay to do these Externships, does the fee vary from Hospital to Hospital? And how long does it have to be in order for it to be counted, and damn if I need 3 LORs, thats 3 externships. PLease someone help me out Also, whats the deal with the malpractice insurance??

Thanks. Me

Hi there !

I am a medical student and I am suppose to attend a clinical clerkship, an elective next summer in Illinois,USA. The only problem is that I am not able to find some information about the posibility of contracting a personal liability insurance = malpractice insurance, insurance that is mandatory and for visiting students it is not offered by the host university, nor by the home one!!!

Can anyone of you help me in this matter, recommending me an insurance company that deals with this sort of inssurance or the procedure that I have to follow. What companies or brokers should I contact in order to buy an insurance like that ?

Thanks very much and please excuse the trouble !
My e-mail address is docsergio2003@yahoo.com
