I am a student on F1. If i join residency on j1 can i change status without going to home country or is it mandatory to get stamping from home country. Thanks.

u can change status within usa. and we know u love the drug - but if possible try to post under a meaningful heading smiling face

not essentially home country, anywhere outside USA for 2 years then U can come back with any visa/GC , but U still can extend ur visa up to 7 years, U can also do J visa waiver to serve 5 years in medical underserved area (MUA) instead of going outside for 2 years
