what happens if i match some place in march but dont join? are we debarred from appearing ever again?
when do we sign the contract - april or may or after starting residency?

i think u cannot participate in the match for around 4yrs. u sign contracts after the match. so dont include a place in ur rol where u have no intention of goin.. otherwise u will b in neck deep in something which the british very unkindly refer to as "pure"

Residency contracts are usually matched right after the match. If you match and don't start a program, you might be reported to the NRMP. It's serious.

4 years - too scary. u sure about that?
what does NRMP do if one is reported for not starting a program?
for contract signing one needs to be in US physically?

If you truely have a good reason for not starting, family problem, health issues, can't get a visa - most programs will understand. But not liking where you matched isn't a good reason.
