42. A 4-year-old boy is being evaluated for renal calculi. Urinalysis shows numerous hexagonally shaped crystals. Urine concentrations of several amino acids, including ornithine, arginine, and lysine, are increased. Which of the following is the most likely predominant component of the crystals?

A. Calcium oxalate
B. Cholesterol
C. Cystine
D. Struvite
E. Uric acid

HELP!! does C qualify among the contenders?

  #2

yes, all these amnio acids are basic, so they make the urine alkaline, and that can predispose to Sturvite.

doens't Acetazolamide alkalize the urine (by retaining all that bicarb in the urine)?

how is that the treatment? i would think that it would only make it worst. anyone know the mechanism?

although important to remember COLA with Cysteinuria...BLACK be sure to google search for PICS of these stones. I have heard of such pics being on the board. So make sure you what they look like (and hence WHY we call them "envlope or coffin-lid shape)...
