wud u expect iron deficieny to manifest as microcytic anemia immediately

or is there a progression

( guess thats obvious now) what is the sequence u think

ok lets think of it this way..uve got water flowing into a utensil out of a larger storage tank. into the latter is the water input via eg Pipe B.

in the human body ur net input wud be pipe B, the storage reserves, the tank.

wud a lack of input into the tank be immediately manifest in the utensil?

no. first the water in the tank has to finish; until then the supply to the utensil remains.

similarly iron deficinecy duz not manifest overnight, initially the reserves are gonna be used up [serum_______ ( ferritin) ] and overtime the iron deficiency is manifested.

thus initially there is a normocytic anemia. infact goljan recommends doing iron studies n the work up of NN anemia too.

lactoferrin is part of the body's defence mechanisms against pathogen. it binds iron. this gives us a clue. if lactoferrin is part of our defence against bacteria. they must need it for growth.

in chronic inflammatory conditions, the body duz something simiar. it reduces availability of iron. hence DESPITE ADEQUATE STORES ( hint abt ferritin levels)iron is not available ofor use..neither for the pathogens, if any, but NOT for the body's own use either. its like iron is locked up in a cupboard but the key has been lost ( goljan imagery!).

thanks a lot vallia

sorry guys ive been away but i cudnt help it...great job aarya and vallia. do u have any questions or shud we superficially go ove the equations?

whilst u decide here r a few pointers

1. Bite cells are higly suggestive of?

2. fragmented cells suggest?

3. what finding on a smear in a question eg on sickle cell anemia or hereditary spherocytosis wud indicate poor splenic function?
