A new treatment for elevated cholestrol is piloted on a sample of 100 men, ages 45-49 wiht total serum cholestrol in the range of 260-299 mg/dl at entry. Following three months on the medication the mean cholestrol for the group was 250 mg/dl with a standard deviation of 20 mg/dl. what is the 95% confidence interval on the mean for this study?

1. 210 - 290 mg /dl

2. 230 - 270 mg/dl

3. 246 - 254 mg/ dl

4. 248 - 252

5. 249 - 251 mg/dl

Please explain your answer.

250 +- 2 (20/10) = 250 +- 2x2 = 246 to 254

standard error = SD/square root of sample= 20/10=2

95% CI= mean+/- 2*SE=250+-4= 246-254
