Hypertrophic can have diastolic failure in the most advanced form, but essentially yes only restrictive is diastoilc.

systolic dysfunction: tend to be younger (<65), low ejection fraction, S3 gallop and displaces PMI. Begin as hypertrophic, but ends up being dilated cardiomyopathy. cardiomegaly diastolic disfunction: very old people, restrcitve and hypertrphyc cardiomyopathy (concentric cardiomyopathy), S4 gallop, heart size tend to be normal. EF is normal (>50%). restrictive cardiomyopathy: (not very common): underlying cause such as sarcoid, amyloid, hemochromatosis, cancer and fibrosis...

I know what youīre feeling i had exactly the same problem. the point here is that for each one of them they will give you a different presentation with different characterisitics always, just to confuse you...but memorize more than one, and the right answer will come to your head before reading th options. I hope so!!!

No memorization! Unless absolutely necessary. Just ask yourself, Is this a problem filling the heart (diastole) or ejecting the blood (systole)? The logic here is that restrictive cardiomyo doesn't let the blood in pass a certain point. Dilated cardiomyo lets the blood in, but is not strong enough to "eyaculate" it! Hypertrophic, as you can logically asume by now, has both components but as stated previously, the systolic predominates until late in the dz. when it is so bad that there is no more space for blood in the ventricle. Try understanding and you will hardly ever need to memorize again.

Rock on guayoman!! memorization is useless itīs the basic understanding of concepts that will last through your career. Hey frank100 no disrespect, you seem like a rockin doc and sometimes memorization is all you have left (icosahedral viruses and double stranded ones in step1!!!!) but pretty much useless. No disrespect to virus lovers either!!!!!!!

The thing here is that some people are REALLY good at memorizing. So it becomes easier for them to do so. The rest of us need to understand in order to avoid the use of extra space in our hard disk.

in medicine, you need to memorize obviously a lot of information and also understand concepts. both of them.
