Even though metronidazole has not been found to be teratogenic, it is tumorigenic in mice and mutagenic in the Ames test. So it carries a B pregnancy rating in the 2nd and 3rd trimester and contraindicated in the 1st trimester. It is OK to use vaginally in the 1st trimester, maybe thatīs what kaplan meant.

i think a mistake was made in kaplan obs. metro is certainly not safe for use in first trimester. it may be used in second or third. a woman with candidiasis is treated with local douching until later when it can be treated.
