I donīt know where to write my USCE in the CAF. There are spaces for work, volunteer and research but Im not sure. I did 3 electives clerkships (radiology and IM) as a visitor student in the USA so it were part of my medical training and not a work. Any idea? Please help me. Thank you

The CAF part titled EXPERIENCE(S) says:

"For each relevant work, research and volunteer experience/position you have had, please provide the requested information. Include Clinical and teaching experience as work experiences, and include all unpaid extra-curricular activities and committes you have served on as volunteer experiences"

It's not very clear but electives clerkships in the USA are clearly unpaid so i guess that they should be included as volunteer experience. But Iīm not really sure. Any idea?

By the way, why there is no a clear space for USCE in the CAF? They know that there are many IMG in the match and we want to write our USCE because itīs a very important part of our applications.

reply please

Volunteer experience!Remember, Program director will see everything in ur package,If he thinks of blessing ur cv with his hand but If he has already thought not to touch aplicants CV It will not matter wherever he/she has mentioned USCE.

the reason why i m writing it under vounteer experience is simply becoz it was volunteerd and the most important part is I do not want Program Director to feel tht i m trying to fool him.As most of them are more cleverer than we all and dealing with these things since many years.SO THEY WILL DEFINATELY READ OUR VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE specialy if it is mentioned as first point.

GL everybody.

well isnt USCE a clinical experience --> so a work experience? it doesnt say that it has to be paid or unpaid

second part of the statement, include all... is for extra-curricular activities and committees.its not for USCE. thats my take on the language. what say?

I totally agree with Maverick on USCEnod
But about observership I still have a doubt. Does it go into work-since it is "clinical" even though it is observational??? I dunno.raised eyebrow

well it would still be more clinical than 'extra-curricular and committees' so a work experience

i think volunteer refers to stuff where u help out the community etc ie stuff outside the hospital, pulse-polio programs in india for eg or old age programs

It doesn't really matter where it goes. I think the best place would be work, even though you aren't getting paid for it - that's where I usually look for it.

I'm just trying my best to catch up to your posts number. Although I don't stand a chance because I don't post in the forum exam zones. It's confusing and all my answers are the smart a$$ ones

This excerpt comes from the ERAS help section on the site: application process guideline>Step 6 Create your profile and MyERAS application> Using MyERAS - Application > Page 5 Experience:

I hope this helps to clarify the limited instructions in the actual CAF.
Page Five - Experience
Page five allows entries for each work, volunteer, and research experience you have attempted or completed. Complete the required fields (marked with an asterisk *) and click Save. The page will refresh to allow additional entries. For each entry you must list:

  • Experience Type (Work, Volunteer, or Research) Organization Name Position Supervisor Name Average Hours per Week Description of Duties Reason for Leaving Dates of Experience

If you have no work, volunteer, or research experience click on None.

You can choose from three experience types: Work, Volunteer, or Research. Work experience refers to any employment for which you were compensated. Volunteer work refers to service where there was no compensation. Research experience refers to employment where research was conducted regardless of whether or not you were monetarily compensated.

List only experience that you believe is relevant to your application.

If the experience is ongoing leave the end date blank.

i don't think it is a big deal, you can describe the experience that you did, so PDs will read the description and will know that it was a USCE, regardless if you put it in volunteer or work experience.
