to joel, please pardon my insensitivity regarding your grief towards your current situation, but i cannot help to post my thoughts here, coz i want to speak in behalf of those who are in the same situation as I am. I am also an IMG, who have high hopes of getting into surgery, and this whole USMLE process for me was a rollercoaster ride, but i did everything by the book, pass step 1, 2 and CS in one take, (and now preparing for Step 3), and I know everyone in this forum underwent the same painful process of studying and waiting for their scores, and going through the match process is the most nerve-wracking experience we have ever..... well, experienced. you never got it easy, i never got it easy, everyone never got it easy. WE ALL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS, whether we like it or not, its just a matter of some people having everything served to them in a silver plate, while others will have to wait for the leftovers. having 8 categorical interviews in surgery is such a minor achievement (pardon the sarcasm) and oh boy, the chances of NOT MATCHING is such a statistical dilemma compared to those who never even got an interview. Consider my unfortunate situation, applied to almost 60 programs, and not a single interview. never applied to other specialties because, just like you, and everyone in here, my passion for surgery is immeasurable. Jan 15 came and it was announced that we can already send in our ROLs. Would you like to know the hospitals i'll be ranking? well, my ROL won't matter coz i never had an interview...... no matter how long my list goes, I KNOW I WILL NOT MATCH. do you know how it feels to just know the fact that i will not match? But, my hopes are still high coz the scramble is just around the corner, and somewhere out there, i'll get something from the numerous unfilled preliminary surgery positions available. and when I get that 1 year, well, i'll be more than happy to go through the match ALL OVER AGAIN. Was it a waste of my time and effort? nah, it's just taking longer to get to my dream, but i'm there. So, though no harm done joel, i think having 8 interviews for categorical surgery is a statistical advantage over those who got 2, 1 or 0 interviews. i have no chance of matching no matter how long my ROL is, while you have some chance, and a better chance of matching. it's something to look forward to. so chill man.

That's the spirit hecmd23!!! Nobody said that getting into surgery in the US was going to be easy, and I admire your determination to reach your dreams. It gives hope to the vast majority of people in this forum that are not as fortunate as joel. I also have no other option this year that going to the Scramble... as long as there is a little hope, it's not over!!!

hey joel, i understand how you feel...the thing is being an IMG myself, no amount of interviews are enough to make you feel safe. Just think how did you interview? are you a strong interviewer...cause you are goin up again AMG, DO, and other IMGs with the same credentials, some lower...but they can interview really well. so the interview makes a huge difference. we are all the "same suits...with similair credentials...or we wouldnt have gotten the interviews" till we talk. i think 8 is very strong, cause it only takes one good interview to put you into a program. you will be ok, make sure you send your thank you letters.

thank you lilly. I just tried to be myself in the interviews and got good feedback, but you never know, there are just so many people interviewing for 2 or 3 spots each, pretty scary. anyway thanks for the support, karma to you my friend.

hey wassup joel. so many IVs coming even now? and wassup with u guys squibbling over stupid issues. basically its each his own right. have met interns who got successful with 1 IV call in surgery last year and some didnt succeed with 15. so each has a right to feel tense. last years NRMP stats reveal that having more no of calls as an IMG doesnt increase ur chances of matching. so there goes that theory. so guys chill and enjoy the US!

Hi everyone, congrats to all those who got interviews and good luck to all of you who are in the Match this year. I was wondering if you all could please help out in posting the hospitals in which you got interviews as a IMG/FMG for surgery. I would like to compile a list of "IMG-Friendly" hospitals for Surgery Residency, so I know which ones for sure are open to giving interviews to us and I won't waste my time with the rest. I started a new thread a little down the list on this same forum (but sadly no replies so far), and I would really appreciate any assistance you could provide for which I would be very thankful. Good luck and God bless. -DrVirgo.

Hey maverick, yeah I got lucky. So you are saying the more interviews you get DOES NOT increase your chances of matching???

No joel, he is saying even if you have a lot of interviews, you still have the right to be worried about match. I hope you good luck and I see you matched this year. Lot of success is related to your interview day and how you impressed the interviewer, PD, chariman and cheif resident.

amirhossein wrote: check usmelforum for surgery interview thread. Which USMLE FORUM??? Step1, 2CK, 2CS??? Wouldn't the right place to discuss this topic be here in the Match forum instead of the USMLE forum... I have not seen such a thread there. But if you know where it is, please let me know. Thanks.
