Thought I'd drop a note. I just canceled a bunch of niterviews for general surgery ( concentrating on Urology, was afraid of not matching, but can't afford the travel). Hopefully, some of them will go to you guys. And for the record, interviews are granted on a rolling basis i.e. if someone cancels, someone else will dropoff the wait list and be offered an interview. I found this out by talking to the program director at my school snd to a couple of other places. I know a couple of places have not even sent out interviews yet so there is still hope. Anyways, good luck and maybe I'll meet some of you on the interview trail or during residency.

Thanks for the note Sustenance. Can you write down the places you know are yet to send their interviews?? I think it'll help drop down the anxiety level of some of us if any applied to one of those programs...

Hey pHR, i just received interview offers from mount sinai in nyc. the only places I have yet to hear from are stanford and ucsf. I have gotten interview offers or rejections from all the other places I've applied to. I applied to 15 gen surg programs and got 11 interviews. Hope this helps.

Thanks Sustenance. I also applied to Mount Sinai in NY, both Cabrini and the main program, but have not received any notification yet. Do you think i should wait a couple more days for an email from Mount sinai and the other programs on my list or should i write them to check my status???? Its frustrating to be here waiting, Im thankful that Im studying for step3 so I have my mind in other things not just the waiting.

I would wait. I have a feeling the next wave of interviews is post-thanksgiving. There will not be any activity for the rest of the week If you do not hear by middle of next week, I would email them then. Also, when you email them just reinstate how much you really wanna match to their program. Hope this helps.

Thanks Sustenance, your words give me some hope. I knew that being an IMG in such a competitive specialty would be hard but not quite as it's been. I could say without doubt that it's been worse than for the exams. So I'll do as you said.

Could you suggest answers to these questions: 1) What was the most important event in your life? (What do they mean by important - regarding education or life in totality) 2) Describe the worst attending with whom you have ever worked? (How to handle it tactfully) 3) Why did you apply to this program? (Real reason: coz they r IMG friendly haha. Should I just mention the positives of that program?) 4) What qualities are you looking for in a program? (what to say for univ, what to say for community and what for univ affiliated hospital) 5) What have you heard about our program that you don’t like? (how to handle with tact) 6) Describe your ideal residency program in this specialty. (how to make it sound that that particular program is the ideal and not come off as a liar) 7) What will be the toughest aspect of this specialty for you? (how to handle with tact) 8) What kind of qualities does a person need, to be an effective Surgeon? (any suggestions) 9) If we had one spot left in the residency class, what one of your attributes qualifies you more than any other candidate? (what should it be)

i applied to both prelim and cat in most programs...from many programs like creighton, harlem, etc , their invitation doesnt specify whether its for prelim or categorical. so is it ok to ask them? or is it so that whenever its prelim, there clearly say so and not otherwise....my friend told its not safe to ask if the interview is for prelim or cat as they might think we are not confident of ourself or often they want to decide after interviewing....so in that case how do we know what are they considering us for and how do we rank them also there is a program which gave me invitation for prelim position however i requested it to consider me for cat and it agreed to consider for both. so while ranking programs, do we get a choice to choose prelim and cat seperately for each program i.e can we rank them twice once for prelim and 2nd time for cat?? do the programs also do the same i.e rank a candidate if they want seperately for prelim and say again for cat?

At this point you will have to hope for cancellations. Most interviews have already been given out. More often than not people do cancel and you might get off the waitlist.

joel wrote: How many IV's for you xavecor? I have 5. Is that good enough? Unfortunately, I'm so far empty handed. Only rejections and one waiting list TY. In the other hand, I think you should be pretty happy. According to the AAMC, IMGs that do match in surgery have a mean of 6 interviews, as a matter of fact anything over 4 is good. So, congrats man!!! BTW, where did you get your invites, any suggestions to improve my pathetic situation?
