I am an old FMG (1992) step1=94, step2=92, step 2cs= passed (all first attempt)/ no step 3 Most likely with green card (getting ready next month!) Working in USA for 4 years with preclinical research/ no USCE but in contact with patients for clinical research 3 good LORs I have 2 questions, indeed: 1. I am already a cardiologist in my country and that is what I want to do in USA. Should I say that during my IM interview? Some people told me to avoid talking about interest in competitive fellowships because they might reject me right there considering the lack of a future for me (very difficult for IMG to get into cardiology) 2. Do I have any chance of getting a good program being an old IMG and without USCE? If I want cardiology, I need to go to a strong University program, correct? Thank you so much!

Thank you Apurva! Your post is a big relief. I tried my best to get good scores but I still see so many bad comments about being an old IMG. Several programs, indeed, post in their websites that if you are graduated for more than 5 years, you shouldn't even bother sending application. I also heard that other programs don't list this criteria officially but they do use it during selection. So, sometimes I fear that my application will go straight to the "Don't interview" pile right away, regardless of scores. Any way, there is only one way to know: trying. Hopefully I will have a very happy message to post in this forum in March. There is no question that you are really well prepared and I am sure you will get a great position. Best of luck!!

old imgs are prejudiced against. but that applies to those who were out of medicine for personal / economic reasons. u on the other hand are technically a 1998 grad (considerin the 6yrs min of md and dm experience if ur from india). most sensible progs use the date of grad in residency as cutoff rather than ur mbbs yr of grad. hope u get strong us lors out of ur 4yr research experience. thank u for ur wishes. hopefully i too will have something happy to share come march apurva

well the actual figure is that over 50% of practicin cardios are imgs. maybe ur talkin about current fellow stats. and yes gi and cardio is very tuf as the earnings put u on par with an ortho / derm / radio.. and yes its dominated by indians for we are "sensitive" to the matters of the heart but hey no1 said it was gonna be easy.. but yes sometimes i do wish that it wasnt this hard
