Can any one tell me what happens after doing a int med prelim year? Does one get to join PGY2 or does one have to do PGY1 again at some other program? What r the chances of getting a PGY2 position? And if one does get a PGY2 position, when does that start? Assuming i start a prelim position in Sept, when do i start PGY2? I have a lot of conflicting views regarding this...any solid opinions and clues wud be greatly appreciated!

After IM prelim year you apply for PGY2 in IM if you want to continue in IM. PGY2 positions are not easy to find. Getting into one greatly depends on your prelim year program stats(how many previous prelim yr guys have manged to get into PGY2?) and also on whether PD helps you by recommending to a vacant slot/putting in a good word...which again depends on you. You can reapply to PGY1 next year if you are changing branches but must be ready to explain change. Applying to PGY1 in same branch is not encouraged(something to do with funding)-advice from experts...BBB may help. The start of PGY2 depends on that programme.
