88/217 (Jun 30) Q bank score Kaplan Qbank: 40-50% (3months before exam) NMBE: None Background: Very old IMG, Surgeon in China for 7 years, doing Ph.D in usa. Meterials: Kaplan note, Q bank + Q book, Goljan path book + audio, BRS physiology, Pretest Pharm + Neuro, HY for anatomy. Exam performance: Excellent: Muscuskeleton/skin; Renal Weakest: Behavioral and Nervous Exam experience: I screwed up dozen of easy questions, but I believe I also made some very tough questions right (based on elimination all the wrong ones and my surgeon background). Just like all the people said, no matter how good you are, you will screw up some rediculously easy questions during the exam. Don't panic, just move on and do the rest of exam like not thing happened! This is the key for success. For people target 99%, Kaplan Q bank is not enough, done the high ranking reference book listed on FA. Crack all the Q with a speed of 2-3 days/ book. Then go over the weak and wrong Q again. You will be Guaranteed to land on 99%! I am not kidding. I have two kids and a intensive relationship with my wife. I have to sleep in the classroom for 2 weeks because of constant fire between me and my wife, too bad for such a so called "USMLE STEP 1 EXAM". By the way, I had prepared this exam for 18 months, but only serious for the last 4 months, I am a very sluggish guy and always burst a the final moment. And, this is the other reason that I can't get 99%. Final pearl suggestion for all usmle exam takers: Treat your wrong questions on all the question source AS SERIOUS AS POSSIBLE, cover them 3-5 times in a very SHORT cycle, ie 2000Q in 3-5 days (Yes, you have to be a good reader and you better have a quick mind and strong will)! Last, sincerely thanks to evrey contributors of this forum, without your inspiration, I would never and ever be able to go through those darkest day and night!

Congratulations! I am also from China. Recently I prepared for step1. Did you get your Ph.D? I am a Ph.D student now. It is hard for me to concentrate on my book when I am back from lab. Where did you get Goljan path book + audio? Is this good for Path review? Thank you for sharing your experience.

Dear lwang: I got Goljan path book at Amazon.com. But somebody told me in another forum there are some links for free. I am not sure how it work, but seems like man people were using it. As a Ph.D student, you better clear you qualifying exam first. In my case, I have to write a NIH mini review and that would take quite a few time to prepare. You can't fail this one, otherwise you are n't going to stay in the program. A Ph.D degree is very good for you to get into good program. Best luck to you, my friend

Congratulations! It is so encouraging to hear an old IMG does well in the exam. I am an old Chinese IMG studying for the exam as well. I am so sorry to hear your troubled relationship. Nothing could be more important than having a supportive family as a foreigner. We have plenty of stress from outside already. You are a strong man! keep your faith. Good luck with your further steps. You will make it!

Thank you for posting. I'm a 5 year + graduate, and did not pass 3 times. Every success story is an inspiration, especially one in the face of odds. Hope your relationship smoothens out. We all have bumpy patches. I am just recovering from one
