Hi, I am new to this forum. I just got my step 1 sore sheet and I was shocked to see 202/82 when I was expecting in 90's. My paper also didn't go that bad. I just don't know what happened. I am feeling very low. I am an IMG and altogether new here. Can anyone tell me if I still have some chances of getting residency here. I gave my exam on June 29th 2006. I just wish I had found this forum earlier. P

Dear Poonam, I find it a bit hard to swallow that you sit there with having passed and are still upset. I can understand your need to want to do better which is great, however, i think when I look at your score its far better than the person who failed once, twice, maybe more. And to say your upset, is wrong in my opinion. Be grateful that you passed when so many others don't. Rather than lament on whats done, try picking up the pace and aim for an even higher score on step 2. Any improvement seen on your score will only be looked upon in a positive way. I really can't sympathize with you though, and quite frankly to post a really good score like you got and be so worried about it shows a bit of immaturity in my opinion. As far as getting residency is concerned, well good luck in that. I know people with 99's who are finding it immpossible to get one, and then there's people with 80's who land residencies, so its a tossup. Anyway, good luck in the future.

Well Burdenbeat I don't agree with you(as for sympathy or immaturity...issues), yes it is a blessing to pass the test at all, but if you had aimed and expected a much better score I can totally imagine how you would be shocked to see you didn't get it. But you're right, and Poonam should try harder for next steps and also the score is just one of the factors for residency, so it's not like if you get 82 there is no chances and if you get 99 you'll get in for sure.. Poonam try to overcome your sadness and start working for the next step, as burdenbeat said there are a lot of people who get residencies with scores like u, so don't loose hope.

congratulations poonam! i think thats a decent score and you don't have to feel that this is the end of the road for you. i agree with khorshid - only you know how much u studied and what your expectations were, but all the same - U MADE IT! so be grateful for your blessings. in fact, only yesterday a friend of mine was telling me about her friend who gave this exam 7 times and is finally doing a residency in family practice. so u see, there's always light at the end of the tunnel........you're in a much better situation than her...... also, i know someone who had a triple 99 (step I, II and III) + MPH from a US school and landed a residency in Int Med in a very average hospital in Bronx. so just because one gets a 99 doesn't mean they always get a residency of their choice in a hospital of their choice. of course, these are extreme cases, but there are always exceptions to the rule.........so cheer up and hit your step-II books!

Thanks burdenbeat, Khorshid and Zenith for your comforting words. I still feel hard to digest the reality . It seems like even hard work doesn't pay off I had really studied hard for my step 1 for 4 mths. Anyways I have a long way to go. I will put in my best for the second step but I see to have lost all my confidence.

hi poonam cmon buddy i wont give u any wrong sympathies like b/b and khorsheed i know it hurts and should but all i can say is that "THOSE WHO LOOK BACK AT THEIR PAST HAVE THEIR BACK TURNED TOWARDS THEIR FUTURE" and i agree that it is not a good score and not at al for an img but what im sure of is that a score of 90+ will definately wipe out this 82 and one more thing that im in coherence with these guys is that even with 99, 99 u may not end up with a residency and even my fren with 86 84 is doing her residency in int med need not worry just pull up ur sox and i know ull breech the 95 barrier in step two please do let me know ur nbme score and please do tell me if there are any mistakes that might have commited so that we may improve before we fall a mail from you will be jus great doctorpallav@gmail.com keep fighting its not the ned of the road regards pallav

Thanks Pallav for your supporting words. I think you are right that there should be no looking back now. I think I did the following mistakes: 1. Give more simulated exams, don't simply read books like I didn' do any NBME, Kaplan simulated etc. 2. Give exam when you are comfortable with your preparation as I just hurried with my exam. 3. Go to forums, try to have contacts with people who are preparing for the same, discuss topics with your friends. I didn't o any of these as I was new to US and didn't know anyone nor did I check online either. I just studied in a vacuum going hrough the books only. I hope this will help all those preparing for the exam. GOOD LUCK
