I have been reading residents opinions about different IM programs and I must confess that I feel a little bit frustrate. Many talk about disorganization, attending arrogance, senior residents paternalism, lack of bedside teaching, etc. In many programs, residents seem to learn on their own. I haven't yet found a program where everybody is satisfied and has the same opinion about the teaching level and the atmosphere. But maybe what I'm claiming is impossible.

there are so many programs wamba that is hard to generalize, top university programs have an excellent academic system and only very good things (organization, humble attendings, etc.) but it's hard to get that kind of programs. that's the issue.

you get good and bad people everywhere and in the same way you get good and bad things everywhere, regrding whom you want yourself to be associated with and what you want to pick up from people (good or bad) is entirely up to you!!! it is something which is based on the principle of free will.

Opinions and appreciations varies betweed different people, try to do your own search based on what you want... research, patient volume, location, funding, etc... that kind of info is available and more objective than individual opinions. Good luck

FREIDA and hospitals webpages could be a good first step for that. scutwork is sometimes very subjective, as Isther says.

thank you guys. You might be right about the subjectivity of scutwork. I was really surprised to read from some people that some programs were wonderful in all aspects and others saying that the same programs were terrible, with attendants threathening IMGs with J1 visas. Is the match in a university program like Jackson's univ or John Hopkins tougher?

theres nothing wrong with j1 visa, even though there r certain limitations and has 2 year home requirement it opens up more fellowship opportunities for you,i got 3 prematch offers on H1B but i choose J1 because i wanted to go into a university programme rather than a community programme. It is upto individual choices.
