Dear all,
I´ve been reading lots of messages at this forum in the last couple of weeks, since I was trying to decide whether I should prepare for the step 1 exam or not.
This is my case:
I am a Dutch medical student, within 6 months I´ll graduate. Two years ago I did a research project in the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota. Ever since I´ve been thinking about taking the USMLE exams. Now, all of a sudden, I have two months off since I have to wait for my final clinical rotation. So I think this is the opportunity to go for it, study two months full pull and try to pass the exams (and since I am an IMG, preferably score above 1SD). I would really love to do it, but I´m not sure whether two months will be sufficient, since I have to start from zero.
There is another consideration. Although I´d love to work in the US for a couple of years, my intentions are not to go to the US and stay there for the rest of my life. What I´d like to do most is trying to get into a residency in the Netherlands and try to do a part (let´s say 2 years) in the US. I am not sure yet if I´ll be able to make this work. I am not into residency yet, maybe I´ll never get in. Maybe I can do the whole residency in the US, I don´t know.
What I´m trying to say, is that I´m not sure yet if I´ll ever go to the US to work as a doctor, so maybe I´ll pass the USMLE exams but never need them.
I think I´ll go for it anyway, but I want to make decision final this weekend. Is there anyone who wants to share his or her experience, wants to give his/her opinion about what to do and how to make it work?

yes go for it you have nothing to lose by trying and believe me this is the best time for you Fresh concepts and still in the school mode.Don't let life crowd in on you before you attempt this.You'll be glad you did it this time
