What are the best IM programs in the USA? Anyone rank them reputation wise...

  #2

According to USnews, the top 5 med centers are Johns Hopkins, Mayo, Mass General, Cleveland, and UCLA... You could rank them if you got an interview there, but as you can imagine they are highly competitive unless you have 200+ scores, publications, US exp >1year, which could increase your odds.

Good luck!

Hello there BBB, how are you, long time no contact with, hope everything is fine whereever you may be, for me, I may be at a top 5 program per US News, and I did interview at other top 5 programs, I dont really think theres too much merit in USNews rankings, Im having a hard time believing what I see is world class. My freind at Mass General is even worse off, hes been telling me stories that were to say, a bit shocking. Anyway, glad to see you on the forum as always....

WoW!

(and unfortunately this isn't the first time I have heard someone talk of being 'dis-illusioned"!)

Maybe it has something to do with the efforts that one has put in to get to such a place...kind of like feeling that Mount Everest isn't tall enough when you get there...I dont know (and unfortunately, might never know!) how this must feel - to be at one of the best programs and yet not feel quite-so-good....

Can anyone tell me that Cleveland of which state is so competetive.....I am not very aware of USA best programs and would not like to apply to very competetive programs and waste bucks.... there is a cleveland in OH and also FL and maybe somewhere elase also .... the reply from the PDs of these programs make me blv that I can apply to one of them... now i am getting worried b'cos if these are very competetive, how can I meet their requirements with my average scores.. Also the email that I rcvd from John Hospkins in Maryland says that they consider all first attempts.. now plz tell me that this is not the same John Hopkins which is very competetive....

In my search, there are quite a few univ programs that accept scores of 80 + and some accept UK experience... now do u feel that it will be wise to apply to such programs??Or is it just an illusion created by these programs??... I have nearly assigned 42 programs in IM so far ..... I am worried now....

A very honest advice is needed plz.... esp from senior members

big kahuna - cleveland clinic ohio
john hopkins, baltimore maryland..

i ustand thats a disaster of universal proportions if mass gen doesnt match 100% into gi and cards. but im sure they will live to fight another day...

id pick a decent comm hosp over some of the best indian hospitals anyday. i know what awaits me back home..

what usa news reports is the top specialtities, NOT the top residency programs, there is a difference between top hospitals and top residency programs.

So.... is it okay to still go ahead and apply for big names and see ur luck.....provieded, one meets the application criteria for these big names.... what is the diff b/w community hospitals and comm hospitals, univ affiliated... i mean.. in ur advice above.... u would suggest just community or univ affiliated community hospitals....

Also.... if i apply to both prelim and categorical... does it affect my applicaton for categorical .. bcos the PD might think, i am not confident enough or may ne bot intereted enough for the program

in my openion: famous programs R those the best with reseaches, from US news
U can Tailor ur choice according to what U need in the program, (facilities) , try also to choose the program which provide the fellowship U want, coz they take thier own resedent more than other program resedents, beside U'll make lot of connections & relations within ur program after the resedency wink
I wish my reply would be helpful, not only confibulations

I think that the program search should be taylored according to your profile and expectations. Its hard to beleive that Mass Gen, an institution with such a worldwide prestige can be that lame... maybe collateral factors like the type of city or amount of contact with patients can be key when you hear inputs about programs, but then again, those factors should be reviewed before submit the rank list.

Certainly, this top centers have their reputation mostly because the amount of resarch they produce, not for the type of clinical training they give. You can find state of the art clinical training in a very small town hospitals. So if it is your desire to be a pure clinician, and live in a calm town away from police car sirens, then it would not be the best thing to rank first Mass Gen or Johns H.

I dont know what to say about what Im reading fomr you guys, but I have seen some residnets pass up places like Mass Gen or Hopkins to go to places were theyre more comfortable and match better...so think of it that way guys. Look at other things, but ur feeling of a place are the most important things to consider. My program that Im at is 'top rated", but I had other higher ranked programs to pick from, whereas I ranked where Im at #1 because of the support to the house staff that I saw is unmatchable...so it depends on what u look for....
