a 42-y-o man is brought to the physician by his wife b/c of a 2-month history of staring speels that last 1 to 2 minutes each. During episodes, he also smacks his lips and picks at his shirt collar. 4 year ao, he was comatose for 2 weeks after sustaining a head injuery in amotorcycle collision, he required 6 m of rehabilitation. He reports that, over the past year, he has had intermittent episodes of smelling burnt rubber that occur approximately every 2 weeks. He hears an intense hissing sound during these episodes. Examination shows no abnormalities. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?

complex partial seizure

there is a history of trauma, and you can localize which parts of the brain are affected (e.g amacking lips: temporal lobe).

partial: because it affects a discrete portion of the brain.
complex: he looses conciusness (saring spells that last....)

an absence my take up to 5 to 10 seconds...and in more common in childhood.

-even a hystory of previous accident supports the diagnosis of complex partial seizure.
