To be honest with you, i don't have the answer, some one said this was from the real exam.

Since this is a kid, I think it's A . It's in the sup mediastinum behind the manubium.

Any other opinion?

A- THYMUS

From anterior to posterior there are five planes in superior mediastinum
1. glandular plane - Thymus, (fat in adults with little islets of active thymus left)
2. venous
3. arterial
4. visceral
5. lymphatic

agree with all except with Chrales.

"B..isn't in the mediastinum (its above) "

The trachea is in the mediastinum! It's just not the answer because it's not immediately behind the sternum.

THere is a clue in age- 4 year old - Thymus
Adult - Arch of Aorta will be the answer

  #9

yes Thymus. in kids it is much much bigger and is right behind the sternum.

i think what chrales was trying to point was the importance of aortic arch which in case of e.g. aneurysm can be felt in the suprasternal notch. but it is true in adults
