Q's like this are very comon. ANYTIME you see a question like this you have to think to yourself, "Do i really need to know what exact amino acid the child from Somalia is deficient in???". Clearly not!!!! Stick to the concepts...Essential a.a.'s are all they're really asking. (Since the child has Kwashiorkor...i.e. a protein deficient state) Gotta love the "Pass program" guy for questions like this. I didn't see it then, but i see it now!!

C) LEUCINE In addition to decreasing the availability of ess aa, severe starvationand protein deficits tend to reduce the body's ability to sx even the non-ess aa, b/c the body can't acquire sufficient building blocks to make the aa that it needs. However the purposes of the USMLE, you should pikck out one of the ess aa which include Lysine Isoleucine leucine threonine valine tryptophan, phenylalanine, methionine and Histidine. Some authros also add Arginine b.c it is sx from Phe. all of the other aa listed are sx from glucose.
