I am a very old graduate of 1995 so obviously, my knowledge is very rusty. Originally I was planning on study everything from Kaplan LN + videos and supplement w/ FA and Goljan. I loved Kaplan anatomy & physio and now that I'm done with them I am off to patho.

However after going thru 2 video lectures of it, I am not sure if this is good as the base material for me. It seems to be too outlined and just jumping over the HY points w/ little explanations.

So I am switching to Goljan audios today but I also need a book as well. What should I get? I looked into Rapid review patho but the same thing - the description says it is more of an outline of HY.

Big Robbins (I have 6th ed.) is awfully BIG. I don't want to spent 6 mns on it. Would be getting BRS patho a good idea or would you suggest something else?

Thanks, guys for your help!

BRS patho is good. if you need supplementation for certain topics use Robbins.

Besides big 'Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of disease', 'Robbins family' also has other excellent books:

'Robbins Basic Pathology' - the concise version of big Robbins - this textbook is appr. half of big one's size.
'Pocket companion to Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of disease' - even more condensed review text, but without illustrations;
'Robbins and Cotran Atlas of Pathology' - even more brief review text with numerous superb full-color illustrations, not presented in other books of the 'Robbins family'.
'Robbins and Cotran Review of Pathology' - I think, it's the best review of pathology - contains case-based MCQs and answers with explanations - you should use it in the combination with any above mentioned book, presented in the 'Robbins family'.

and remember - 'you can't review what you never knew'.

Hi Maybe

I am also a graduate of 1995 but I wont say that I am very old. I would say I am an experienced GP. All I need is a proof and for that I am here in this forum. Be positive and you'll feel positive. It will keep your spirits high motivating you. Remember its the spirit which wins battles and USMLE is nothing less than that.

Regarding Pathology I would suggest that look into your circumstances that how soon you want to write it. Shortest would be Kaplan but its not much recommended and forget about BIG ROBBINS even you plan to write it after 10 years. Other options would be Goljan and BRS. Books mentioned by p53 should be good too but I haven't seen them so I can't comment on them. Again, plan your study according to the time you can spend and when you want to attempt it.

Happy studying and GL for exam!

2006?Maybe... :
I completely agree with you on the Kaplan LNs - they are too bulleted and only good for a fast review.
I've been using BRS for my first read - supplement with the Robbins text book ONLY for imp concepts or if you have any questions. Review the slides-figs from Robbins too.
Once I am done with BRS for each section, I review the Kaplan LNs - the videos are almost useless - use the fast fwd function to review the gross and micro specimens from them.
good luck.

Thank you all for your timely input. I've decided to go with Robbins basic patho - thanks p53 for alerting me about this version and it is newer edition than what I have, and get BRS as well and see which one is working better for me. It's so true that can't review if I don't know. nod I am going to stop by local book store today and if they don't have the books then order online.

Oldkidontheblock, vallia and doc.jay, thanks for encouragement and suggestions, I don't really feel old at all but it does feel that I am so long out of school, especially when I read posts of others who just finished or even are still going thru school.

Best of luck to you all.
