I wanna ask some confusing questions in a hope that someone can address them.

1. I will take Step 2 CS on December 7th 2006. I notice that the deadline for NRMP rank list submission is December 1st. There is absolutely no ways of clearing the cs by the deadline. Does that imply my attempt for match 2007 is futile being an international medical graduate/student? I thought the restriction of deadline does NOT work on international graduates/students?

2. What if you are invited for an interview, and you have only cleared Step 1/Step 2CK. Would that affect your interview?

5. Suppose you are matched and you will have cleared all steps but your ECFMG certificate will be delayed due to the fact you are in your last year of medical school? Would that affect your match status??

Truly appreciate all your generous feedbacks.

3. Suppose you are matched under J1 status, your spouse which is under J2 can still work. My question is if she applies for the match as well under the restriction of J1? Can she convert her status to H1 if she clears Step 3

4.What about H1/H4? Is the spouse with H4 under the restriction of H1? I saw a post by someone that it was harder for the spouse to work under H4 v.s that of J1?

rol deadline is not dec 1 by any means.. feb 20ish if im not mistaken.. unless things have changed drastically..

it wud affect ur iview calls and not ur iview per se which depends on ur performance

j2 spouse can work.. h4 spouse cannot.. she cannot convert from j to h until waiver is done.. only option is new j1

for ecfmg certification headaches and deadlines refer to an earlier post by superabood

If your ECFMG certification is late, it could delay your visa processing (can't get a J or an H visa without ECFMG certification and State Licensing requirements (some states you need to be ECFMG certification to get your license). If you can't get it in a timely manner (say by mid-April), it could affect your start date. If you can't start on time, the program may not be able to wait for you to get your certification.

What's this called? Trickle down effect?

well regarding J1 and j2 issues if you go on j1 donot commit the mistake of getting your wife a j1 as well, apply for EAD on J2,
for if your wife starts work on J1 then she also along with u will need to do waiver,J2 on ead can do any job except for being the president of USA!!!,and their visa gets converted to H1b as well as yours once you get a sucessfull waiver.

I concur with apurva regarding ROL deadline it is not December-01.

Most importantly most programmes are worried about Step-2 CS results because you might be good in doing questions (i mean solving them) but CS tests your launguage skills bit of your clinical skills etc.. etc..,so for most programmes if they hire you without your cs results then they r risking big time, just in case(god forbid) if u fail cs then they will have 1 less intern for their first year which is bad given the work schedule of interns!!!,and it is a big headache for programme to find a new resident after the start date!!

J1 cannot in any circumstances be converted to H1B even with step-3,you have only two choices, either follow home requirement of 2 years of serve in waiver eligible jobs for 3-5 years depending on your contract, and in most circumstances you carry on with waiver jobs till u get ur greencard.

yes spouse under H4 needs to find an employer who can sponsor a seperate H1B for her as well,H4 cannot work!!!

Once you fulfill all the requirements then ur ecmfg cert will be with u within 10 days in most cases so it shud really not delay your start date.

bbb,

Thanks for the great information. I guess I have to delay one year to fulfil the requirements being the current medical student of last year at medical school. In another word, there are no ways that internatinoal students can be matched even though they do clear the steps because the certification process of school diploma takes at least 2 months to complete and I did wonder how that was possible. I guess I will go for H1 in that case. Again, appreciate your info.

Katzung,

I wonder about that as well. I read a post by someone in another forum, saying that He signed the prematch offer but later found out he failed Step2 CS and was really devastated by the news because he had to be withdrawn from the program. I guess you are right, it is better to have ECFMG certificate first in order to apply for residency. As for H4, say that she passes step 3. Then she can apply any hospital that sponsors H1, is that correct? Because I got confused when people said H4 cannot work at all even with passing step 3??

yes she can apply to any hospital sponsoring H1B,that is right.

Good Luck.

i fully ustand ur point about certification ruinin a yr even thoh u have completed all the steps.. they shud allow us to give s3 without certification if s1, s2, cs are passed.. and jsut keep requirement of certi for startin resi

i too had faced a similar scenario.. the entire medical faculty was kept out of filling up the degree forms at my uni as the deadline passed before we finished iship.. then i had to raise a hue and cry with the education minister and petition the vc to get things worked out.. we did win but from day on i decided to never mess with bureacrats..

doc_droc_apurva,

right on bureacracy. but come to think of it.. we r very fortunate to be given chances to do residency training in the states if we do get matched.

yet, there are many annoying facts that i cannot stand.. sending mails on regular post.. c'on, we pay so much for the fees.. oh yeah, they probably say.. we r really busy and we dont force u to take usmle, do we? and bunch other issues that i wont disclose here.

have u finished all the steps?

best of luck

Bureaucracy and the red tape are everywhere...you may change lands and cross the fabled 7 seas, but believe me...you will never quite be done with bureaucracy...(for the time you will apply for your visa..should you need one)
