If someone does not fast before a blood test which of the following will happen? They will get: A. Falsely Elevated LDL B. Falsely Lowered LDL C. Falsely Elevated HDL D. Falsely Lowered HDL E. Falsely Elevated Cholesterol F. Falsely Lowered Cholesterol (EXPLAIN why!)

e. chylomicrons go up so cholesterol level goes up too. but cos chylom have low levels of TG in them they do not affect the levels of hdl, or ldl.

B? [LDL=serum CH-serum HDL-(TG/5)] as TG level falsely increases, there may be decrease in LDL

Answer is B... According to this formula: LDL = CH - HDL - TG/5 If one does not fast they raise their TG (TG is falsely increased by chylomicrons in the diet), therefore LDL will decrease. Fasting is needed for accurate measurement of TG and LDL. NOT for CH or HDL. Now that we know this is true according to the formula, can anyone explain how it works in the body? Thanks.

i dont think this formula applies here..it can be used for calculation presumably but not for this case...see we can only predict that LDL is gonna decrease if we assume that Ch remain constant...however if the increase of 1 in Ch and TG/5, its not so simple.. id stick to E
