People with DAT get disoriented.

Often no body checks time...hence place disorientation is detected earliest...
familiar Person last... if disoriented to person, they will be disoriented to new persons as well!

ok, yes, I think time, place person is right...

Dr. Papez, we do check time... We ask the patient to say the year, month, date, etc... We ask who is the current present, etc... MMSE, remember? smiling face

Time first -date, etc (who is president, etc.) -person may say old pres name.
Place next -where am i? I don't know where I am or I say the wrong name of place.
Person -who is this person (friend) -Patient doesn't know or says wrong name.

Thats about it.

we do check Orientation to time...but care givers of patients don't...they come when the patient is disoriented to others...that is what I meant.

It depends on the case...
You could get a person with early DAT who is ONLY disoriented to TIME...
OR you could get someone who is further alon in the course who is disoriented to TIME AND PLACE..
And finally you could see someone who is disoriented to PPP...

Depends on the patient and how far along in the course they are. Thats why it's important to know this.

Dementia has a slowly declining course over years so you can use this to gauge it if you catch them at the beginning of their dementia, and follow up over months and years.

Sounds interesting...The term Disorientation is often used in the setting of Delirium. Even in delirium I am not sure about such well dfined course of disorientation. But sounds logical but not sure of scienitifc evidence.
In dementia, disorientation usually means... signficant recent memory impairment. Time changes every now (hence difficult to keep track) and then unlike place or person....and hence they are likely to affected early if one keeps checking it ofen early in the course...
Can you let us know the reference for this?

  #12

Reference is my clinical rotations in Neurology and Geriatrics. grin

-You can probably find it in a neuro book too...
