Which MAO (A or B) does MAO-I's act on? Which one is everywhere and which one is only in the brain? Which one metabolizes NE, Seratonin and Tyramine? Which one metabolizes Dopamine? Does one of them also metabolize Epi?

depending on the type MAO inhibitors may inhhibit one or both. selegeline--MAO B phenelzine, trancyclopramine and isocarboxazid both..

You are right.. And the MAO-I's (Phenelzine and tranylcypromine) inhibit BOTh MAO A and B. I was not sure about Epi either... I know Epi is released mostly from the adrenal medulla versus NE from nerves, so I was wondering how an MAO-I would affect Epi metabolism... (but it says so in Kap: mechanism of action: "inhibits MAO, an enzyme that metaoblizes serotonin, epi, and NE." so???????

epi is also broken down by MAO. it is secreted by ad med and circulates but moa breaks it down. selegine would not cause the adrenergic crisis like the others cos it works only on the B for brain.

MAO is intracellular in the nerve cell... So how can circulating Epi be broken down by MAO? Remember Tyramine displaces NE from the mobile pool! (in a nerve cell) so more is available in presynaptic area. you must have inervated sites where MAO-I's work... -just confused on this!

epi is also taken up by the cell or how else can it exert its actions???? it is very confusing but the main thing is we know epi is metab by mao. period. so we tell them that. leave the rest of the puzzle to them!!! we are not biochemist or pharmacologist. we are doctors!!
