Kap behav says: MOA is blocks NE re-uptake and serotonin and histamine receptors.

So what is the final result: increase or decrease of these?

WHY would we want to INCREASE NE in an already psychotic person?

increase in the synapses. so they spend a longer time there cos they are prevented from being uptaken by the presynaptic. so they stimulate the post synaptic membrane longer.

NE, 5HT increase is beneficial in depression but not in mania or schizophrenia. you need to look closely at what drugs you are talking about though. cos not all of them act to block reuptake.

antipsychotic:
PHENOTHIAZINES: MOA main action. 1. reduce DOPAMINE 2. OTHER ACTIONS: block alpha adrenergic receptor ( chlorpromazine...> hypotension), increase ach cos dopa is blocked ....> Extrapyramidal sympts, ....>parkinsons.
CLOZAPINE, OLANZAPINE: block D2c and 5HT2. less extrap.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS
MAOI: MOA...inhibit breakdown of catecholamine and increase conc in mobile pool thereby increasing prejunctional levels.
TCA: MOA block re-uptake of catecholamines, other actions, alpha block...>hypotension, m block.
SSRI and HETEROCYCLICS: MOA...BLOCK NE and 5HT re-uptake.
