What is the most common cause of viral or aseptic meningitis in USA ? What are the CSF findings in a case of viral meningitis ?

enteroviruses CSF: high pressure, clear fluid, protein elevated, normal glucose, lymphocytes predominate, Gram stain neg

i think it's echovirus ( enterovirus) but mumps is a frequent cause of aseptic meningitis too!

will there really be a protein increase.....I think its only a marginal increase or no increase at all?

I'm not sure of the correct answer, but I DO know that our latest addition to our molecular test menu, Enterovirus PCR testing - mainly on CSF - has been a HUGE hit and we're running quite a few of these for our hospital and other hospitals in the area, with more positives than we thought we'd have when we set up the testing (I don't know the numbers).

I see,so before this your viral meningitis was diagnosed mainly without PCR prior to this then?

Yes, our Virology Department cultures the CSF's. I know absolutely nothing about viral culture TAT (turnaround time) but it's at least 2-3 days, maybe longer. I assume they plant the CSF on some type of cell, but again, I am clueless. We received a CSF for Enterovirus PCR tonight at 11 pm before we left, and they'll be performing the testing tomorrow morning - and - if the controls work (that has been somewhat of a problem lately) - they'll have a result by tomorrow afternoon. The test takes about 4-5 hours to do.
