it affects the extensor tendons to the thumb at the anatomical snuff box. the 2 main tendons affected are ext poll brevis and abd poll long. occassionally the ext poll long is affected. test is finkelstein... put thumb inside folded fingers and then gently put hand in ulnar deviation. sharp pain just proximal to radial styloid is positive. treatment: local steroid injection or release/excision of tendon sheath.

deQuervain's tenosynovitis Problem: The disease is an entrapment tendinitis of the tendons contained within the first dorsal compartment at the wrist, resulting in pain with thumb motion. Patients note pain with thumb and wrist motion and tender thickening at the radial styloid The tendons of the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis pass through the first dorsal compartment. how do produce pain at the site?

The Finkelstein test (ie, flexion of the thumb across the palm and then ulnar deviation of the wrist) causes sharp pain at the first dorsal compartment
