Parents cannot withhold life or limbsaving treatment....... If in doubt, court takes over (this is a rule)!

What constitutes life saving??? and what doesn't????

Can you all give some examples?

What would you do in a situation in which parents refused care in the following:
-Chickenpox
-Childhood vaccinations
-Stitches
-Infection and kid needs antibiotics (eg. simple URI or something)
-What if kid was going to go BLIND without help???? can parents refuse treatment?
-What if kid was going to loose a finger?
-Seizure treatment?
-Meningitis

(any others?)

Either you do something or the patient dies
you as a doctor become a surrugate parent
and provide what is needed

Come on everyone!! What would happen in each situation???

USMLE is not as clear cut as you think... They throw things at you that you have to use your mind for... so lets try to think what would happen in each situation I mentioned...

another example... a kid gets his ear cut off and parents refuse you to suture it back on... Then what would you do? Have to listen to parents?

Kap only mentions "life or limb saving" yet, we cannot refuse eye saving...

All the answers are not in the books, so lets try to work together to try and figure these out!

Thanks.

in the first three cases id say ud have to listen to the parents...depending onthe choices, counsel etc...im assuming the stitches are of a minor bleed.

if the lesions in chicken pox have scabbed, the child is no longer infectious. before that i think ud make sure other exposed individuals are protected. acyclovir is used in IC and adults..but in kids..i not sure

sorry dr virgo i dont think i made anything clearer...

ear saving is cosmetic so i would say you cannot enforce that. you will need to go to court for that. ( by judgement time, too late for surgerygrin)

finger saving is limb saving. this is clear cut. your judgement takes preeminence and child goes for surgery.

dr virgo, dont beat your head in. just keep it simple. i think that is the main rule of USMLE. sense of hearing is not life or limb saving. so no surgery.
