Hi everyone - I never used these forums while I was studying or earlier in med school. The anxiety level in these things freaks me out. But my attempt at staying laid back left me perhaps TOO laid back. I just found out I failed. I'm devastated. I was going through a lot of stuff in my personal life at the time and I hope that most of the reason behind my failure was the inability to really focus. Needless to say, my self-esteem is in pieces right now. I am going to wait until after I've finished my 3rd year to retake it. I need some time to get over this, and I think I'll know more then for the test. I'm also considering taking a Kaplan prep test for the second time around. The thought of sitting alone and reading for hours and clicking through qbank for hours just about kills me completely. I'd appreciate advice/stores from anyone with similar experiences currently or in the past. Thanks.

i dont have experience with failing step 1 and neither have i done it yet but the most important thing is not to dwell too long on a failure lest it drags you down. you are already on the right path to success second time around cos you ahve analysed the cause of your failure and you have made plans for the next step. i failed an important exam in med school and i also learnt the lesson you have learnt. this is never to underestimate any exam. it is usually not so much how intelligent you are but how diligent you are. wish you all the best second time around. people have done it and so can you.

tolito'scorrect: put this mishap behind you. Learn from your mistakes. Take some deep breaths. Drink some water. At least digest Kaplan and first Aid till you can regurgitate them, get a motivated study group. Get up and fight like you never did before!!!!

i have my exam in a few days...and all i can say is u were too hard on yourself..maybe thats y u didnt succeed initially...u dont wanna make the same mistake again i havent failed but i have done poorly in other exams...and the main reason in retrospect was that i did not give credit to myself...the stuff in ur personal life DUZ effect u..ppl might think ur making excuses but U r NOT...especially if ur a sensitive person.. this duz not mean u r stuck. the lesson to be learnt is that recognize u r in a difficult position, but DONT DWELL on it...find ways of altering ur situation..DOING the Q bank and trying to study alone was not a good idea, because it didnt take your limitations into account..BECAUSE u were too hard on urself to begin with....AND U DONT WANNA MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN! People commit murder and start afresh...u just didnt do well at an exam which u have an opportunity to retake...REMEMBER its ok to make a mistake, its ok to ask for help

Thanks for all of your kind words of support. I think I got a lot of good advice in there. It has helped me keep my spirits up. I'm on my surgery rotation right now and any time I miss a question from a resident or attending, its like pouring salt on a fresh wound. But when I get some right it feels really great. My score was low (170/70). My study method was probably wrong. I focused hugely on First Aid and getting through Qbank. Doing practice questions is what helped me for the MCAT a few years ago, but I probably overdid that this time. I think I lacked a solid foundation of some concepts, especially in pharm and physio. I did one NBNE practice test at the outset of my studying, and created tests from qbank for a couple of other practice tests. My friend has given me her Step One kaplan home study guide (the four volume series) that I may try to read over the next few months while I'm also studying for shelf exams, at least for my weaker subjects. Then I'll take a month off at the end of 3rd year and do an intensive study again, this time possibly with a kaplan course to help me with time management. I expect by then the pain of doing it the first time around will be a distane memory. My school's dean of education is meeting with me and others in my situation to help... they are really helpful so I look forward to that meeting very much. Thanks again. I'd welcome any more advice.

keep im glad uve started planning and that too very wisely just dont over over pressurize urself... whenever u miss a q in ur rotation, make a conscious effort to block ur self comment on indequacy... whenever u get it right focus on it!! u'll snap out of it

i disagree with you on calling 70 a low score. you are just on the verge of passing. they say near the passing border, every point is worth almost 1.5 questions. which essentially means had you answered almost 7 more Q.s correctly you would be partying right now this means essentially that you have a sound base and you may relay these few mistakes on the personal and enviromental conditions. but i do not mean that you overlook your probable strategic mistakes in preparing but don`t kill over them. we all make mistakes but those who succeed in life are those who get up after they fall and learn from their mistakes. besides, it is a routine for all of us med students to be crushed by attendings` toughies every now and then and feel like we don`t know anything. if we knew all the answers, we would be attendings eventough, i doubt they know the answer to all of their questions you stand an amazing chance to get a great score second time around only if you do not lose hope and keep it up. i wish you the best result for all the steps to come.
