•i keep mixing their time limits and they r important... schizophreniform vs acute psychotic dirorder vs schizophrenia Generalised anxiety disorder, acute stress disorder, PTSD, ( and when u term it chronic?) depression, dysthymia, Mania separation vs stranger anxiety ( initiation and resolution)

Symptoms from the time of stressor: acute psychotic dirorder- more than 1 day less than 30 days schizophreniform - more than 3months but less than 6 schizophrenia - when schizophreniform goes beyond 6months Generalised anxiety disorder - More than 6months acute stress disorder - more than 2 days less than 30 PTSD - stress disorder symptoms lasting more than 1month depression - more than 2 weeks dysthymia - milder depressive Sxs with lesser functional impairment for atleast 2 years Mania - 1 week or more stranger anxiety - 8months to 2 years [peaks 12-15months] separation anxiety - 1 to 3 years

oops...one more point is there anything abt 3 months for PTSD for terming it as chronic?

hmm here i am again well i tot that the duration of normal bereavement is 6 months but i have an older kaplan version ..but the kaptest explanations for the step 1 cd (2006) say "Uncomplicated bereavement may last for up to 3 months (longer for close relations, and in some cultures), and is typically characterized by the type of symptoms described in the question stem." cant aces dsm IV on hte net.. will appreciate ur help

iam not sure i have come across any reliable source that says this is the DSM IV criteria for duration of normal bereavement. I think it ranges from 3mo-6mo upto a year or beyond...depending on cultures etc like how you pointed out. But if symptoms of MDD last for more than 2months, then Dx changes to MDD. (ie. after 2 months the symptoms shdnt be too severe or incapacitating) Also if the person suffers from the symptoms listed below, then one must consider pathological grief. >Guilt about things other than actions taken or not taken by the survivor at the time of the death. >Thoughts of death other than the survivor feeling that he or she would be better off dead or should have died with the deceased person. >Morbid preoccupation with worthlessness. >Marked psychomotor retardation. >Prolonged and marked functional impairment. >Hallucinatory experiences other than thinking that he or she hears the voice of, or transiently sees the image of, the deceased person.
