guys, calm down and just think it through. what 2 pathways occur to keep blood glucose level normal in a fasting state?---> glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, right! glycogenolysis only occurs for the 1st 24 hours. then after that the body uses gluconeogenesis to keep blood glucose elevated. So there has to be a problem in one of these 2 pathways!!! Well if in the 1st place some how glygenolysis pathway was block, then the major pathway would be occuring is gluconeogenesis and the child won't be severly hypoglycemic and comatose. so nothing is wrong with this pathway then!!!! In this child the gluconeogensis is not occuring right. At first the child was ok for 1st 24 hours because glycogenolysis is occuring. but when the body runs out of glycogen and trys to use gluconeogenesis to keep blood glucose level stable, it CAN'T do that!!! But in the question they give alanine(amino acid) and glucose level increases. so this means nothing is wrong with the pathway of gluconeogenesis. So now what??? Well gluconeogenesis occurs from either 2 substrates: lactate or protein(amino acids such as alanine). so mus protein break down releases amino acid which go into gluneogenesis pathway!!! so something is wrong with the protein break down in the mus. so answer is D. u guys r right. it takes more than a min to do this question

it's D. here is my explaination. patient is hypoglycemic right ? what can it be due to ? gluconeogensis, now alanine is a subtrate from muscle (protein catabolism) if the patient is infuse with alanine and the glucose level respond mean there is NO defect in gluconeogenesis, but the defect is due to alanine deficient. and alanine come from where ? muscle (protein breakdown) choice D: is correct...proteolysis just mean protein breakdown if the patient does not respond to alanine, then the defect is in gluconeogenesis
